I have been a photographer, a cook, a fisherman, a wanderer and a wonderer. I have traveled the country by car, train, motorcycle and bicycle living in many states along the way. As a child growing up in an Italian American household, I was constantly surrounded by and fascinated by food. During that time if I was not in the kitchen, I could be found drawing or creating something. After graduating college with a BFA in photography, I then worked in the restaurant industry for the following ten years. As I moved from state to state I also moved from waiter to bartender to sommelier to cook and finally pastry chef. My interest in wine led me to work harvest at Chehalem Winery in 2007 where I promptly fell in love with the Willamette Valley and Portland. After a few more years of travel and adventure, I chose to return to Portland to attend the Oregon College of Art and Craft where I earned my Post Baccalaureate Certificate. In ceramics I have found a medium where all my worlds converge. It is my aim to create soulful and functional wares that feel great to use while being beautiful to look at.

PRODUCT INFO AND CARE
Each piece is handmade by Michael Newsome. The materials include porcelain and stoneware coated with non-toxic ceramic glazes. Often surfaces are left unglazed and expose the raw, natural beauty of the clay as well as revealing evidence of the hand-making process. Expect subtle variations in the forms and surfaces, as these are inherent in this process and give each piece unique beauty. All tableware is food-safe, dishwasher and microwave safe. However, hand-washing is suggested as a means of taking greater care.
My ceramic cookware is made of clay formulated to be used in an oven or directly on a stovetop, barbecue, or campfire. This cookware possesses all the heat retention benefits of cast iron without any need for seasoning. Its glazed surface is low stick and easy to clean. The pots will have a long life if allowed to cool before cleaning and are best maintained with hand washing. While unlikely, cracks can occur if they are misused or subjected to extremely high heat. Radiating a soulful glow, these pots will look as beautiful on the table as they do on the stovetop. Also, much like cast iron, the entire piece conducts heat and should be handled with appropriate care.
